Sinking Of The Laconia + Zen

A couple of recent mini-series.

The Sinking Of The Laconia is an adaptation of a true story that took place in 1942 when a troop ship filled with civilians, wounded British soldiers and Italian POW's was sunk by a German U-Boat in the South Atlantic off western Africa. Rather than leaving the victims to their fate in the water the U-Boat decided to attempt to rescue as many of the survivors as they could. The U-Boat was joined by others and attempted to get the survivors to a Vichy France Red Cross ship but they were spotted by American bombers which attacked. Following the Laconia Incident both the German and United States Navy ceased the attempted rescuing of non-combatants and entered into unrestricted submarine warfare. I have no idea how many "dramatic liberties" the film takes. It is a joint BBC / German production.

Zen is adaptations of 3 of the 11 Italian detective Zen books by the late Michael Dibdin. Filmed in Italy but entirely in English, it is a joint production by British, Italian, German and WGBH-Boston for PBS Masterpiece. I don't know if there are future plans to make adaptations of any of the other 8 books or not.
