Storyboard

Storyboard was an anthology series Thames TV used to air drama pilots in the 80's. The missing episodes were later developed into series and are found with those series with the exception of Lytton's Diary, which is found here and not on the Lytton's Diary discs. (I didn't have it at the time.)
Those are:
4 - Woodentop.......now serves as the premier episode of The Bill
5 - The Traitor.......became an episode of Mr Palfrey of Westminster
8 - King & Castle..became the first episode of King & Castle
9 - Ladies In Charge...found on the Ladies In Charge disc.
13 - A Question of Commitment....found on the Mr Palfrey of Westminster discs.

Inspector Ghote Moves In starring Alfred Burke and Tony Doyle
Judgement Day starring Carol Royle and Tony Steedman
Secrets starring John Castle and Barbara Kellerman
Lytton's Diary starring Peter Bowles and Frances Tomelty
Thank You Miss Jones starring Susie Blake and Patrick Barlow
Making News starring Bill Nighy and Celia Imrie
Snakes and Ladders starring Peter Blake and Duncan Preston
Hunted Down starring Alec McCowen and Stephen Moore

Special Feature: Singles' Night starring Robin Nedwell. Originally produced as a Storyboard edition, this play was ultimately transmitted outside the series banner.

Ladies In Charge

Ladies In Charge starring Juliet Hills (2point4 Children, Dad), Carol Royle (Life Without George) and Julia Swift (daughter of David Swift).
This touching drama series charts the fortunes of three young women who, having returned from their voluntary service as ambulance drivers during the First World War, decide to set up a 'universal aunts' agency to help those less fortunate than themselves. This set comprises the complete series alongside the pilot episode, scripted by Upstairs, Downstairs' Alfred Shaughnessy and screened in 1985 as a drama in ITV's Storyboard anthology.

Penned by a largely female team that includes novelist Fay Weldon, Ladies in Charge stars Carol Royle, Julia Hills and Julia Swift as the ladies of benevolent intent; guests include Imelda Staunton, Julian Glover, Michael Gough, Richard Vernon and, in one of his earliest television roles, Hugh Grant.

The Man In Room 17 + The Fellows (Late of Room 17)

The Man In Room 17 is a late 60's crime drama with a different twist, which you can read about by clicking the link below because I'm tired and going to make this short. Starring Richard Vernon and Michael Aldridge in the first series,....Aldridge was replaced by Denholm Elliott in the second (Aldridge was a very busy stage actor at that time). The third series, in 1967, was rebranded The Fellows (late of Room 17) with Aldridge rejoining Vernon. This show had that kind of breezy 60's hip vibe to it, similar to several other intrigue dramas back then, and there are many familiar faces that turn up in these episodes but I'm not listing them. The 1968 criminal drama Spindoe (posted here Christmas 2011) was a spinoff of The Fellows with that character appearing in three of the 13 episodes.

Father Charlie + We'll Think Of Something

A couple of rare 1980's British comedies.

Father Charlie....back before there was Father Ted there was Father Charlie. Don't think of those Derek Nimmo shows. Lionel Jeffries was very good in the title role. With some familiar faces like Deddie Davies and Jamilla Massey (Mind Your Language). Anna Quayle was in Grange Hill in the 90's. (Her first film or TV appearance was in 1964's A Hard Day's Night.) Appearances by several popular character actors such as John Savident, Deirdre Costello, Diana King, Terry Duggan, Tony Selby........
Father Charlie

We'll Think Of Something starred Sam Kelly and Marcia Warren (who had appeared together in Now And Then just before this show). Everyone knows who they are, right? Oh, alright. Marcia Warren: Vicious, Agatha Raisin, Edge of Heaven, The Cafe, Life of Riley, No Place Like Home and appearances in everything from The Dustbinmen to Father Brown. The late Sam Kelly: Barbara, Holding On, On The Up, Haggard, 'Allo 'Allo!, Porridge and appearances in everything from The Liver Birds to A Touch of Frost. Some of his last appearances include the film Mr. Turner, Outnumbered, My Family, Poirot, New Tricks......

upcoming UK comedy

For those outside of the UK and to answer some questions I receive:

- The Job Lot is halfway through its third series. This one is a good example of shows that had a somewhat shaky start but were given another chance to find its footing and sort itself out...although  it seems the job center is now just the setting and the people working there never do any work.

- We're almost 4 weeks into the 10-episode big budget comedy You, Me and the Apocalypse.

- Scot Squad returned last night for its second series.

- The Kennedy's is halfway through its (first?) series. Seems like a pretty good family comedy but it's on BBC One and I have to wonder how well it fits into their agenda. They are inserting little bits to make it politically-correct, but will it be enough?

- Mount Pleasant, the comedy-drama, has a couple more weeks to go in its fifth series.

- The new series Together reaches the halfway mark tonight.

- A new 3-episode comedy called Bull, starring Robert Lindsay, Maureen Lipman and Claudia Jessie  (in WPC 56 earlier this year), begins tomorrow night.

- Drifters returns for a third series this week.

- Next week Catastrophe returns for its second series. I'm starting to wonder if Sharon Horgan is  capable of playing a mentally stable person. Maybe she did in Todd Margaret. I can't remember now.

- Detectorists returns next week. I'm looking forward to that.

- Also next week, Citizen Khan returns for its fourth series.

- Coming up, in the first week of November, Trollied will be returning for its fifth series.

new Bannan

I posted this disc about a year ago. Now the Scottish Gaelic drama Bannan has returned with 5 new episodes. Reports are 10 more episodes have been written for the Isle of Skye drama, but no word on when they will be aired. It's possible they may be held back for a year, but in the meantime the 5 new episodes are available.
Bannan set to go global

Hard

Hard is a French comedy-drama. A third series just aired a few months ago. I imagine it will eventually become available with subtitles.

The Brokenwood Mysteries - Disc 2

New Zealand's The Brokenwood Mysteries has returned with a second series.

Wallander - Disc 11

The last missing pieces of Wallander: the first 3 films made in the mid-90's. Nine Wallander films, starring Rolf Lassgård as Wallander, were made between 1994 and 2007.  Overlapping those, a new series of films began in 2005 starring Krister Henricksson as Wallander. There were 32 films produced, in three series, between 2005 and 2013.  So this 11 disc collection now includes the complete 20 years of Wallander, but is a bit of a jumble because that's how the films became available.

House Husbands - Disc 4

Australian drama House Husbands has returned for a fourth series.

EastEnders 2015 - Disc 6

Double Deal

Yesterday I sat down and watched last night's episode of The Job Lot and then after that watched last night's episode of a new BBC comedy called Together and got a double-dose of Nick Mohammed. So between 10:30 pm and 11 pm last night this guy is on both BBC Three in Together and on ITV 2 in The Job Lot.  I wonder how often something like that happens?

I remember a couple years ago, in early April, Nicola Walker was starring in three different shows which were airing over two consecutive nights or something. (Scott & Bailey, Prisoners Wives and Heading Out) but they weren't on at the exact same time.
(Ironically, at the moment she is starring in both the BBC Tuesday night crime drama River and the ITV Thursday night drama Unforgotten.....but then she gets a lot of work anyway.)

Pigalle la Nuit

Pigalle la Nuit is a French thriller drama from 2009. If you watched the recent Witnesses (Les Témoins), Catherine Mouchet is also in this one. I'll put this link in here and hopefully it will open in English and not French for you. If not, these pages usually have a translation option on the right side of the IP address window of your browser.
If not, here's something else:
"Frenchman Thomas (Jalil Lespert) based in London comes to Paris to secure a deal for his company. In the nightclub "Folies Pigalle", on stage he recognises his sister, as he tries to speak to her, she goes missing. Here is the simple start of this excellent captivating French series. I simply didn't think it could be this good. The story makes perfect use of Pigalle, the Parisien "hot quarter". The story quickly becomes about revenge, territory, redemption. This really is edge of your seat drama."
It appears the link opens in French, but if you use the Chrome browser you can translate it by clicking as shown below.

The Strain - Disc 2

This Is England '90

The drama This Is England returned once again, reportedly for the last time. This series takes place in 1990. These are nice big files....very good quality, especially if you already have This Is England '83, '86 and '88.

Also available is the entire thing in smaller resolution and much lower bitrate files all squeezed onto a single disc.

Dag - Disc 1

Dag is a Norwegian somewhat-black comedy-drama series about a marriage counselor who thinks people should live in solitude. He hates spending time with other people, except with his friend Benedict who is struggling to be faithful in his own relationship. Dags life changes when his well-meaning sister, Marianne, forces him to go on his nineteenth blind-date with her old childhood friend, Eva.

Goodbye Mr. Kent + Roger Doesn't Live Here Anymore

Two rare comedies from nearly 35 years ago.

Goodbye Mr. Kent starred Richard Briers and Hannah Gordon.
Goodbye Mr. Kent

Roger Doesn't Live Here Anymore aired around the same time as the first series of Only Fools and Horses. Starring Jonathan Pryce (in his first leading role in a full TV series) and Diane Fletcher (The Irish R.M., Fairly Secret Army, House of Cards, Breathless) with appearances by Michael Elphick, James Cossins, Richard Vernon, John Horsley, Hugh Lloyd, Harold Innocent, Anthony Sharp.

An Klondike + Résistance

Couple of new drama's.

An Klondike
Colin in New Zealand provided us with the first NZ western awhile back (Good For Nothing on Smorg 90). Now we have an Irish western, only this one isn't cowboys and whoopee-tai-yi-yo. It takes place in the 1890's in the mining camps of Montana and Yukon. A lot of the dialogue is in English, but many of the Irish speak Irish among themselves......as they actually would have. This has received positive reviews. My only nitpick is they are the cleanest looking miners and prospectors living in the wilderness I've ever seen. They must have had a great laundry service back then.
article in the Irish Examiner

Résistance is a French big-budget mini-series from last year. Well done.....I don't think I can ever watch 'Allo 'Allo! again without feeling a little guilty when laughing. I was trying to find a review to share, but can't find one.
