Sadie, It's Cold Outside + Yanks Go Home

2 comedies from the 70's.

Sadie, It's Cold Outside was written by Jack Rosenthal (who in addition to writing many TV episodes, TV plays and movies, wrote The Dustbinmen, The Lovers, a series of Pardon The Expression, Moving Story) and starred Rosemary Leach (Susan's mother in My Family, Odd Socks, The Power Game, Life Begins at Forty, The Jewel in the Crown, The Charmer, Summer's Lease, Titmuss Regained, Berkeley Square, The Tomorrow People, the US sitcom Growing Pains, An Unsuitable Job for a Woman) and Bernard Hepton (The Charmer, Bleak House, Mansfield Park, Secret Army, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, Colditz, The Six Wives of Henry VIII).
Sadie is about a bored and discontented mid-life wife with a bored-but-contented husband. Sounds similar to Butterflies (which it pre-dates) but Sadie didn't have a Leonard to torment and her children are no longer part of her life.
Sadie It's Cold Outside

Yanks Go Home took place during WWII and was about a Lancashire town and its interactions with the many American military personnel based there. With the final 6-episode series of Dad's Army in production when Yanks first aired, it seems Granada was in hopes of picking up some of the huge Dad's audience, but it didn't work out that way in the end.
With Meg Johnson (on Emmerdale for the past decade), Stuart Damon (who starred in the late 60's spy show The Champions and more recently in several American soaps), David Ross (the final episode of Last of the Summer Wine, The Green Green Grass, Roger Roger, 32 Brinkburn Street, G.B.H.), Alan MacNaughton (To Serve Them All My Days, The Sandbaggers). Peter Sallis (Last of the Summer Wine) appears in four episodes and Richard Wilson (not going to list them all) appears in two.

Girls

Girls is a US comedy-drama that aired last Spring and just started airing in the UK last night on Sky Atlantic and has also previously aired in Canada on HBO-Canada, in Australia on Showcase, in New Zealand on SoHo and in quite a few other non-English speaking countries. It will be back next year for another series. I see Chris O'Dowd even turns up in a couple of these episodes. No wonder we're still waiting on that final episode of The IT Crowd.

Micawber + The Way We Live Now

Micawber + The Way We Live Now

Micawber is nothing new here, but I've had The Way We Live Now sitting around for a year or two and finally got around to doing something with it.

Micawber is a comedy-drama take on the character from David Copperfield. Written by the late John Sullivan and starring David Jason.

The Way We Live Now is an adaptation of the 1875 satirical novel by Anthony Trollope starring David Suchet (of Poirot fame) with a stellar cast. As I recall, this was also aired in the US on PBS Masterpiece about 10 years ago.

Leaving + Mrs Biggs

2 recent drama's. I was hoping to include Good Cop on this disc, which after a delay is ending Saturday, but there isn't enough space. Not even close. The last drama threesome, A Mother's Son + Parade's End + The Bletchley Circle, went over like a loud fart in church, so I guess it really doesn't matter.

Leaving is a 3-part drama about a cougar on the prowl for fresh young meat. Starring Helen McCrory and Callum Turner. Not much info out there about this, but here's a promo article about it.
Leaving

Mrs Biggs is the 50 years back true story of the wife of "Great Train Robber" Ronnie Biggs. Starring Sheridan Smith as Mrs Biggs and Daniel Mays as Ronnie. Filmed in both England and Australia, as that is where the story actually took place....

Underbelly Badness

Alright...for those of you who just can't enough extreme glorified drugged-out violence, Underbelly is back with a new series called Badness. Does anyone else out there besides me wish all directors and actors had to take some sort of weapons training if they are going to play violent roles? Don't you love it when they shoot from the hip? Sheesh.

Colin and Patricia will be glad to see these...which is good because sometimes I think they are the only readers of this blog. I wonder if the lupins are blooming in Otago yet? Hopefully, I'll soon get caught up with the UK's #1 TV show as well - EastEnders.
