Prey 2, Suspects 4

Crime thriller Prey returned for a second 3-episode series and police procedural drama Suspects returned for a fourth series. The Suspects disc is full so it will be here....for now.

Detectorists

I shouldn't say this, but I was really happy to see this one return for another series. I think Mackenzie Crook does a brilliant job with this.....writing it, directing it and co-starring in it along with a great cast. This is about as far away from a Hollywood comedy as anyone could possibly get. The steady gentle rhythm to this just draws me in much like The Cafe and Jam & Jerusalem (for example) did. The Cafe was dropped after the second series and J&J after the third, but hopefully Detectorists will stick around for as long as Mackenzie Crook wants it to. The fact that they were given the opportunity to do a Christmas special last night is a good sign, although it had little to do with Christmas.

Toast Of London

Toast Of London, one of the better current British comedies, returned for a third series.

a comedy update

Citizen Khan returned for a fourth series. The Citizen Khan disc is full so I'll keep this here until I find out if it will be returning for a 5th series. Maya Sondhi left the show and was replaced by Krupa Pattani in this series. Some of the guest stars this time around include Peter Bowles, Abigail Cruttenden, Ronni Ancona and Tyger Drew-Honey.

Hardy Bucks returned with a third series called Ride Again. The Hardy Bucks disc is full so I'll leave this here for now.

Peep Show returned for a 9th series.....and, after over 12 years of life, it was also the final series (although it sounds as if they haven't ruled out the possibility of an occasional special). The 2 Peep Show discs are full so for now I'll leave this here.
Peep Show

Trollied returned for a 5th series. Aisling Bea left the show in the 6th episode of this series. Tonight's double-length Christmas special featured a couple of nice surprises. The 2 Trollied discs are full so I'll leave this here until I know if this will be returning for a 6th series.

Where The Heart Is

Complete 110 episodes, including the 2003 Christmas special, of the long-running drama Where The Heart Is. I had forgotten that the final episode of this reunited Julia McKenzie and Anton Rodgers (who had played a couple 1984-1991 in Fresh Fields / French Fields......speaking of which, last May in the episode of Doctors titled Mystic Madge, Gwen Taylor and Keith Barron were brought back together as a battling couple, carrying over from their Duty Free days back in '84-'86.)

Major Crimes - Disc 7

Blood And Water + The Last Panthers

How about some new crime drama?

From Canada we have Blood And Water....but most of the dialogue is in the various languages of communist China while the setting is Vancouver.
Blood and Water

The Last Panthers....created and written by an English guy but sort of a joint British/French production. It first aired in France on Canal+.  I'm not sure if this link contains any spoilers, so read carefully.

Hard - Season 3

Following a four year hiatus, French comedy Hard returned for a third series. I went to its website and used the Google translator on the season 3 description, but it didn't make much sense in English. I'll try my best to edit it.
"In the first 2 series, unknown to widow Sophie, her late husband operated a porn film production business which she was left to operate in order to financially support her family. Eventually she enters into a relationship with ex-porn star Jean-Marc Danel. When she shares a film on the internet that features an important person she is sentenced to four months in prison.
In season 3 we find Jean-Marc managing a small Corsican restaurant and preparing a new "normal" life for them. When Sophie is released from prison and rejoins him she is afraid she will die of boredom and decides to open a swingers club in their restaurant basement. While boosting the sexual life of many politicians, things rev up quickly. Between state secrets , betrayals and pervasive sex, the couple is found far from a normal life."

Haven - Disc 7

Hollywood-Canadian supernatural drama Haven returned for 13 episodes and that brings this show to an end. The cool thing is they brought William Shatner on board for the last four episodes of the show, which means before it ended it finally had someone that could act.

MacKenzie

Drama that time forgot........really nothing out there about this one. I can tell you this much: Andrea Newman wrote Bouquet of Barbed Wire back in the 70's and the TV adaptation was considered to be quite ground breaking at that time. It was followed up with Another Bouquet and then MacKenzie followed that. So if you're familiar with the Bouquet shows, you should have a good idea about this one. Starring Jack Galloway as MacKenzie (The Mayor of Casterbridge, The Mistress, The Paradise Club, Maigret {1990s}, Lynda Bellingham (All Creatures Great & Small, Second Thoughts - Faith in the Future, At Home with the Braithwaites, Bonkers, Odd Socks), Richard Marner (Col. von Strohm in 'Allo 'Allo!), Kara Wilson (Adam Smith), and a rare drama performance from a very young Tracey Ullman.

It's Your Golden Anniversary, Charlie Brown

After over 15 years as a daily newspaper comic strip, the characters of Peanuts "came to life" 50 years ago today when A Charlie Brown Christmas first aired on CBS stations across the USA. The Thursday evening broadcast was quickly produced for less than $100,000, used child voice actors, had a jazz musical score and was expected to be a "one use - throw away" failure. Little did they know that it would become an annual television event and was a "special" event before the days when most homes had video tape recorders.
Last month a new computer-generated Peanuts movie was released to cinemas which followed a long line of animated features since A Charlie Brown Christmas fifty years ago.
I managed to fit the first 14 Peanuts films (and a couple other files) onto a disc while maintaining a compression bitrate of just over 1000.

You, Me and the Apocalypse

You, Me and the Apocalypse is new comedy drama. The final episode airs tonight and I'm looking forward to seeing how all this plays out. This is a big-budget production, well-written with a lot of twists and features a big cast. Some of the main characters are played by Mathew Baynton, Jenna Fischer, Joel Fry, Pauline Quirke, Megan Mullally, Paterson Joseph, Rob Lowe, Gaia Scodellaro, Kyle Soller, Diana Rigg. This has a similar edge and intensity as The Wrong Mans (which also starred Mathew Baynton). If you're outside of the UK and haven't seen this and plan on taking a long flight somewhere this holiday season, load this into your tablet to make 7½ hours pass by quicker.
No link = no spoiler

The Locksmith + Psychos

Two drama series from the late 90's.

The Locksmith starring Warren Clarke (it's a long list), Polly Hemingway (Airline, Ain't Misbehavin'), Chris Gascoyne (Coronation Street, New Street Law, Soldier Soldier), Sheila Kelley (Moving Story).
"Locksmith Roland Pierce (Warren Clarke) is shaken out of his middle-class complacency when his ex-wife was nearly killed in a robbery attempt. Although the police were certain that the culprit was a local junkie, their apparent indifference to the victim prompted Pierce to become a one-man vigilante force. Alas, Pierce's quest for justice only results in more grief for himself, his
former wife, and his estranged daughter. A great example of early talent (post 'The Lakes'), John Simm shines in this unique drama, which stars the late Warren Clarke as Roland Pierce, the Locksmith of the title. Part gritty drama, 'The Locksmith' also at times seems to want to be a comedy, but don't let that put you off! With some violent scenes, and references to drug use, this is an intriguing and at times chilling tale of how the lives of Pierce and his wife change when young drug addict Paul (played convincingly -and very movingly- by a 27-year old Simm) enters their lives."

Psychos starring Douglas Henshall (Shetland, Black Work, Outlander, Secret of Crickley Hall, Collision), Alistair MacKenzie (Monarch of the Glen, Borgen, Wolf Hall), etc.

Catastrophe

Channel 4 comedy Catastrophe returned for a second series.....in the same year as the first series. Something quite unusual for 21st century UK television and possibly even unique. Taking the main situation of the show into consideration, I would think this one would have been an excellent candidate to produce a Christmas special. Can you imagine these people trying to have a nice Christmas? Anyway, written by and starring Sharon Horgan and Rob somebody with Ashley Jensen, who should be returning shortly as Agatha Raisin.

Bron | | | Broen - The Bridge

Danish / Swedish thriller Bron / Broen aka The Bridge returned for a third series.
