Still Open All Hours

Following up on the 2013 Boxing Day special, Still Open All Hours returned for a series. David Jason, Maggie Ollerenshaw, Lynda Baron and Stephanie Cole all return from the original 70's / 80's show. (No, Barbara Flynn does not return as a 66 year old flirty milk float lady). New faces include Brigit Forsyth, Johnny Vegas, James Baxter {as Granville's son Leroy}, Tim Healy, Nina Wadia, Sally Lindsay, Kulvinder Ghir, and appearances by Mark Williams, Paula Wilcox, Vicki Pepperdine, Kathryn Hunt....and Alan David has a scene walking past Arkwright's store. I could do that. How do you get those jobs? I'm about a foot taller than Alan and would be more noticeable. Still open...and still written by Roy Clarke and as with the first (1976) series of Open All Hours, there's still room for growth. There's a lot of good characters if they can figure out what to do with them. Ollerenshaw and Forsyth's characters have good chemistry and were a bit underused. I enjoyed the few scenes when Granville does a hard-sell and very obviously channels Del Boy much more than Arkwright.

Foyle's War - Disc 6 and another one bites the dust

Foyle's War has returned with 3 new feature-length episodes that bring the story up to the autumn of 1946 and January 1947.  Unfortunately, that is the end of the story (which begins in spring 1940 over 14 years ago) as ITV has pulled the plug on it claiming it is too expensive to produce.

Ascension + Charlie + Mapp & Lucia (2014)

A trio of recent three-parters.....and that is about all they have in common.

Ascension is a Canadian science fiction mystery drama.

Mapp & Lucia is a remake (but new stories) of the popular mid-80's comedy drama. Written by Steve Pemberton, who also stars in the role of Georgie Pillson (played by Nigel Hawthorne in the 80's), Miranda Richardson as Mapp (played by Prunella Scales in the 80's), Anna Chancellor as Lucia (played by Geraldine McEwan in the 80's) with an excellent supporting cast that includes Mark Gatiss, Felicity Montagu, Paul Ritter, Pippa Haywood, Katy Brand, Gemma Whelan, Joanna Scanlan, Frances Barber.

Doctor Who - The First Doctor - William Hartnell - 1963-1966

All episodes with a {R} are reconstructions of lost episodes using the original audio track with production stills and existing film clips.
Episodes with an {A} are reconstructions of lost episodes using the original audio track with animation based on production stills.

This completes the 1963 - 2014 run of Doctor Who and those of you that enjoy the Doctor here owe a big 'ol hip-hip-hooray to Mancunian Ken for very generously sharing his massive collection. Not only is it complete, but it's also top quality and not sourced from boxes of old nth-generation video tapes.

Doctor Who - The Second Doctor - Patrick Troughton 1966-1969

All episodes with a {R} are reconstructions of lost episodes using the original audio track with production stills and existing film clips.

Questions update

Father Brown began its third series this afternoon. There are conflicting reports on whether it's to be the usual 10 episodes, or 15. If it's 10, then it should end on 16 January.

Also, a few people have asked me about the third series of Lilyhammer. I've obtained 4 different sets of it and 3 of them have either numerous video glitches, audio issues or subtitle problems. The only set that doesn't has no subtitles, so if you speak Norwegian, it's good to go.
