Dossa and Joe + Summer Heights High

Here's a couple of Australian comedy programs......sort of.

Dossa And Joe was written and directed by Caroline Ahearne (The Royle Family, Mrs. Merton) during the years she resided in Australia. It's an Australian production but as far as I know it was never aired there and only shown once by BBC Two.

Summer Heights High is another mockumentary work by Chris Lilley (Angry Boys, We Can Be Heroes) where, as usual, he plays multiple characters.

Airline

Airline was a drama program about a WWII pilot that starts his own air freight business with a single DC3 in the late 1940's. It starred Roy Marsden (Vanity Fair {'67}, The Sandbaggers, Dalgliesh, The Palace and few very popular episodes of Only Fools And Horses & The Green Green Grass), his then wife Polly Hemingway (The Mallens, Ain't Misbehavin', Fingersmith, Wallander), Richard Heffer, Sean Scanlan and Terence Rigby.

In The Glittering Prizes post below I commented on how all the women had contemporary hairstyles but the men all looked like 1975. Airline is no better. Supposed to be the late 1940's. Check the two ladies out below.

Yup. Not bad. Looks about right. Now check out the men below.

Oh ya! VERY 1940's! Did they think we wouldn't notice?

The Glittering Prizes

The Glittering Prizes was a mid-70's drama about the lives of a group of Cambridge students over the 25 years or so leading up to the mid-70's and is a semi-autobiographical piece by noted writer Frederic Raphael. Stars include Tom Conti, Barbara Kellerman and Leonard Sachs. This was also aired by PBS in the US in the 70's and with episodes running about 100 minutes not fitting into their rigid 60 minute slots the episodes were chopped up into 8 eps. I believe these must be the source material as some episodes are missing the opening sequence. It's difficult not to notice that for a work that takes place over a span of nearly 25 years, the producers usually had the female actors in contemporary hair styles, yet throughout the program the male actors always looked like they were in the mid-70's.

East West 101

East West 101 is an Australian crime drama that takes place in suburban Sydney and looks like it deals with a lot of the racial problems they have. I have no idea if this is returning for a 4th series.

City Of Vice + Murder + The Bombmaker

3 crime drama's from the 00's.

City Of Vice
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/City_of_Vice

Murder stars Julie Walters.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/drama/murder/

The Bombmaker stars Dervla Kirwan. A TV adaptation of the bestselling novel of the same name by Stephen Leather.
"The Hayes' happy family unit is blown apart when their beloved young daughter, Katie, is secretly abducted from her bed one evening. Andy Hayes discovers a ransom note instructing her to leave her husband Martin and fly to London alone. If they contact the police their child will disappear forever. In the hope that she will be re-united with Katie, Andy obeys orders and follows instructions to meet her captors in an unmarked van. Back in Dublin, Martin is powerless to help and becomes frantic with worry when he learns from Andy that there is no demand for money. Something else is wanted of his wife, something far more deadly... Andy has successfully hidden her past as a terrorist bombmaker, even from Martin. Her kidnappers want her to build a giant bomb in the City of London, which, if detonated, will cause widespread devastation and death. If she refuses, her daughter will be killed. Andy is left with the horrendous choice of losing her only child or causing the deaths of hundreds of innocent people... In this tense drama , there is no escaping the emotional impact of Dervla Kirwan's compassionate mother trying desperately to extricate herself from this problem without endangering the life of her child, or that of anyone else. At the same time she is a woman searching for forgiveness for past sins. As author Leather himself puts it, "There are several major twists the audience won't see coming... it's not a run-of-the-mill kidnapping, ... it constantly keeps you guessing."

Luke's Kingdom

Luke's Kingdom was a 1976 Australian drama series that takes place in the early 19th century in colonial New South Wales. I believe this was also aired by ITV in the UK.
"In 1829 Jason Firbeck, the father, tells his children Jassy, Samuel and Luke, that they are leaving Yorkshire for New South Wales in Australia. When they arrive in New South Wales, the new life which Jason had planned for his family, is blown away when he finds out that the land he was left by a friend has been settled by others. Stranded in Australia with no money, Jason takes his family into the bush, but now they are classified as squatters. The family must band together in order to survive in this new country. The series was based on the novel "Pages from a Squatter's Diary" by E.V. Timms"

Bust

Bust was a comedy-drama (50 minute eps) starring Paul Nicholas (Just Good Friends) and Phyllis Logan (Lovejoy, Hope And Glory Series 3, Downton Abbey) in Series 1 who was replaced by Belinda Lang (To Serve Them All My Days, Dear John, 2point4 Children, Second Thoughts, The Bretts, The Alleyn Mysteries) in Series 2. This is about an unsuccessful "businessman" (aka wheeler-dealer) who tries to rebuild his life after being made bankrupt. Those that enjoy Stay Lucky would probably enjoy this.

Spyder's Web

Spyder's Web was an early 70's intrigue thriller about a secret covert governement agency that
"Using a documentary unit as an ingenious cover, the specialist organisation is directly responsible to the government – taking on jobs that are too hot or too delicate for the police, or that someone in authority is putting the block on. Operating within the ideal anonymity of the film world, with its headquarters an office in a crumbling shared building in Soho, the ‘Arachnid Film Unit’ has representatives in many places; it spins a web to trap the guilty, with a network of highly skilled agents all licensed to kill. An offbeat, stylish and humorous thriller, Spyder’s Web stars Patricia Cutts as the dynamic Lottie Dean, Anthony Ainley as her trigger-happy fellow agent, Clive Hawskworth, and Hammer horror star Veronica Carlson as Tolstoy-reading secretary Wallis Ackroyd. The series was based on an idea by Man in a Suitcase co-creator Richard Harris, and writers include Robert Holmes, Alfred Shaughnessy and sitcom veteran Roy Clarke."
Roger Lloyd Pack had a role in this too.

Speaking of which, he has long received an uncredited appearance in a 1965 episode of The Avengers when he was around 20 years of age. I don't know how this came about, but that wasn't him. Give me a break.

Take Me + The Whistleblowers

2 drama mini-series from the 00's.

Take Me starred Robson Green and Beth Goddard with Danny Webb.
"Their marriage in tatters, Jack and Kay Chambers pick up and move to the English countryside, hoping a new start is all they need to resuscitate their union in this arresting miniseries. But not all is perfect in their bucolic idyll, as they find themselves swept up in a web of deceit and lies. The permanent destruction of their relationship, not to mention their lives, looms, unless they find a way out."

The Whistleblowers starred Richard Coyle and Indrina Varma as
"lawyers at the same highly successful London firm. They witness a miscarriage of justice on their own doorstep and, instead of giving in to the temptation to look the other way, they speak out. However, by trying to do the right thing, Ben and Alisha suddenly find themselves on the other side of the law – enemies of the state. In making the extraordinary journey from average citizens to whistleblowers, Ben and Alisha see the need to support others who are faced with the same moral dilemma. Realising whistleblowers are central to the continuing integrity and freedom of our society, they set up an agency to support those who are brave enough to step forward. Aided by private investigator and friend Kenny Reed (Daniel Ryan), they step into the worlds of the education system, pharmaceuticals, the immigration service, the drinks industry and an environment agency to help potential whistleblowers take on those who will stop at nothing to keep the truth buried."
