Emmerdale - EastEnders - Coronation Street

House Of Fools + Nixon's The One + Uncle

Some new UK comedy.

Reeves & Mortimer return to the box with House of Fools. If you enjoy Miranda and Mrs. Brown's Boys type of productions, you may enjoy this one too.
House of Fools

Nixon's The One, starring Harry Shearer, originally aired as part of the first series of Sky's Playhouse Presents. As with the episode PsychoBitches, it was extended into a series. (Harry was also in last night's episode of Outnumbered.) Based on selected conversations from the Watergate Tapes, it comes across as funny now....at least to those of us that were around at that time and can appreciate Nixon's delusions better than someone that didn't live it. Each episode runs the end credits with a good ol' song from about 42 years ago - Moody Richard by Dan Hicks & His Hot Licks with Maryann Price and Naomi Eisenberg....as I recall. Striking It Rich was the LP. Harry's been around forever, of course, and is well known for Saturday Night Live, Spinal Tap, several voices on The Simpson's, etc., but was also the Eddie Haskell character in the 1957 pilot of Leave It To Beaver. He was offered the part but his parents refused it because they wanted him to have a normal adolescence.

Uncle is new series from Steve Coogan's Baby Cow Productions starring stand-up comic Nick Helm with Daisy Haggard (Episodes, Parents, Psychoville, The Persuasionists, Man Stroke Woman). It is supposed to be returning next year with another series.

MGM Cartoons complete

After several years of being a distributor for some independent animation studios, MGM opened their own studio in Hollywood in 1934 and over the next 25 years, certainly the golden age of animation, they produced some of the finest cartoons ever made.
It took me a long time to piece this together. If anyone has an interest in the history of the golden age, there is an excellent, and very in depth, book that can be found for under 20 bucks called Hollywood Cartoons by Michael Barrier.

Ken Jones 1930 - 2014

British comic actor Ken Jones has died. Of the shows still in circulation, Ken starred in The Wackers, The Squirrels, Seconds Out and Valentine Park, however he is more likely better remembered for his limited recurring roles as 'orrible Ives in Porridge, Uncle Bernard in Watching and Uncle Dermot in The Liver Birds. His late wife, Sheila Fay, also had a recurring role in The Liver Birds and starred opposite him in The Wackers where a young Alison Steadman played their daughter, Bernadette.

Alf Garnett crisps

The big grocery store chain here in Florida is called Publix. It's employee-owned so the profits don't go to the shareholders of some big holding corporation in Belgium, the Netherlands or UK who could care less about their employees or customers, so I give my business to them and Costco - another company that doesn't treat their employees like smokeless tobacco (chew 'em up - spit 'em out).
Anyway, although I'd have to be desperate to eat them, I couldn't help but notice that they've put the image of Alf Garnett on their bags of crisps....or potato chips as they're called in the USA.
I bet their security people, hidden away someplace, are still wondering why someone stopped to take a photo of a bag of chips.
Actually, I'm sure it's just a take on the old Mr Potato Head toy, but I couldn't help but notice the resemblance to Alf, the character played by Warren Mitchell for some 33 years.
