Bachelors Walk

Bachelors Walk was a popular Irish comedy-drama back in the early years of the current century. It ran for 20 episodes and then was brought back a few years later for a Christmas special (actually a St. Stephen's Day special in Ireland which is the same as Boxing Day in the UK and here in the US is called The Day After Christmas....or something like that...also known as December 26th.....this year it will be called Saturday) to give it some closure and a proper send-off.
Starring Don Wycherley, who outside of Ireland is probably best known for being Father Cyril McDuff in four episodes of Father Ted and as Father Aidan O'Connell in 24 episodes of Ballykissangel. Since then he seems to have appeared in mostly Irish-language programs although he did appear in two recent episodes of Moone Boy.
Also starring Simon Delaney (Pulling Moves, Father And Son, The Fall, Moone Boy and appeared in the latest series of Trollied as the nutty owner of the Valco Supermarket chain).
Also starring Keith McErlean and Marcella Plunkett.
Series 1 was released on DVD in wide screen format even though Ireland didn't go wide screen until about 10 years ago. The other episodes are from terrestrial broadcast recordings on video tape and at times the signal goes wonky for a bit. I spent a lot of time trying to improve the digital transfers, which were not done very well at all. It is what it is and as far as this show goes, it's all there is. Know what I mean?
The soundtrack of the show included a lot of music and that may be preventing DVD releases as the licensing of music for TV broadcasts is similar to a radio station playing a song, but issuing it on DVD gets very legally complicated and expensive. A problem John Sullivan shows like Only Fools And Horses and Just Good Friends ran into.

The Saboteurs + Witnesses

Two new mini-series.

From Norway we have Kampen on Tungtvannet which translates to The Heavy Water War which wasn't sexy enough for the TV people so they call it The Saboteurs. Some of this has English dialogue, but the majority of it is Norwegian and German.
Saboteurs

From France we have Les Témoins which has Witnesses as its English title. A "police procedural drama noir".
Witnesses
I'll give these French actors some credit. At least they know enough to actually aim their weapon before firing it.

River City 2015 - Disc 3

The latest from the Scotland drama.

An Independent Man

This blog recently noted the passing of George Cole, whose film and television career spanned some 70 years. Fee in Fife on the Firth of Forth (try saying that 5 times as quick as you can) has kindly provided a rare comedy-drama series from 20 years ago starring George. (The 5th episode has a video tape glitch about halfway through that lasts a minute or so.) There is one review at the bottom of the IMDB page. An Independent Man

David Nobbs 1935 - 2015

Prolific comedy writer David Nobbs has died. David worked on The Frost Report and That Was The Week That Was back in the 60's and also for the various shows of Tommy Cooper, Les Dawson and Dick Emery as well as The Two Ronnies. Probably his best known credit was creating the Reggie Perrin series of shows (The Fall and Rise of Reginald Perrin, The Legacy of Reginald Perrin, spinoff Fairly Secret Army and the re-make Reggie Perrin). He also gave us the excellent A Bit Of A Do , the movie Stalag Luft, Love on a Branch Line, The Life and Times of Henry Pratt, Rich Tea and Sympathy, and Dogfood Dan and the Carmarthen Cowboy...something I've been sitting on for a long time. I'll put it up here one of these days.
