Back in 1988, as an episode of the excellent Alan Bennett series Talking Heads, Patricia Routledge (Keeping Up Appearances, Hetty Wainthropp Investigates) first appeared in the role of Vera Small in A Lady of Letters. Based on a series of books by Carole Hayman and Lou Wakefield, a radio program, Ladies of Letters, was launched 9 years later with Routledge once again as Vera Small and Prunella Scales (Fawlty Towers, After Henry, Mapp & Lucia) as Irene Spencer. Since then, a total of 71 radio shows have been aired in 11 series spanning 14 years.
In 2009-2010 a 20 episode TV adaptation was aired with Anne Reid as Vera and Maureen Lipman as Irene and Reid also played Vera in the most recent radio program when Routledge was unavailable. (I enjoyed the TV show very much.) Anyway, here is the complete 71 episode radio program in mp3 format, over 16 hours of entertainment.
