Mrs. Merton was a character creation of writer/director/actor Caroline Ahearne and first appeared in Upfront, The Smell of Reeves & Mortimer and The Fast Show. The Mrs. Merton Show was a "mock-talk show" (as suggested by Wiki) starring Ahearne and was written not only by her but with Craig Cash and Henry Normal, the trio that went on to create and write The Royle Family (which Ahearne and Cash also acted in and Ahearne directed). Also included is the sitcom Mrs. Merton & Malcolm (in which Craig Cash is Malcolm).
