Barbara update

I just started watching this one myself and wasn't aware that episode 2 was such bad quality
so I tracked down a better version. If anyone got this from me and we have future dealings, remind me and I'll fit the improved version onto a disc for you.

Clampett Castle

I was making a copy of the 1960's US sitcom The Beverly Hillbillies for one of our Australian friends and noticed that in 1967 they did a few episodes in England where Jed Clampett had inherited his cousin's castle (or something). I vaguely remember these eps and out of curiosity gave them a look. Not only did I see Ernest Clark (Dr. Geoffrey Loftus in all the "Doctor" sitcoms) and Sheila Fearn (Likely Lads, George & Mildred) but noticed "Clampett Castle" looked familiar as well. Sure enough, it was Penshurst Place in Kent. In the top photo Jed is looking up at someone on the top. If you can enlarge the bottom photo (which I took) there's a man standing out in the rear courtyard (where the short arrow is pointing) and that is about where Jed was standing looking up to the top (long arrow). So, there's no point to any of this but I just didn't expect to see Ernest Clark, Sheila Fearn and Penshurst Place in a 43 year old episode of the Beverly Hillbillies. Or as Jed would say, "Weeellllll doggies!"

Sitting Pretty

A little while back I offered Series 2 of Sitting Pretty on a disc with Comrade Dad. Now, thanks to the Squire of Stranocum, I can offer the full program. This sitcom was written by John Sullivan who also wrote Only Fools And Horses, Citizen Smith, Dear John, Just Good Friends, Roger Roger and the Green Green Grass.....which all put a smile on my face.

The Commander

The Commander stars Amanda Burton as the commander (!) of an elite London detective murder squad who gets evidence out of suspects by having sex with them. She sexes it out of them. Wow. London...what a whacky town. Isn't this just a reworking of a common porn film theme? Or is that prisoners and jailers?

Eleventh Hour

Eleventh Hour...the Granada science/espionage thriller starring Patrick Stewart. The linked webpage claims this was 4 90-minute episodes and the DVD people claim the same, but they were more like 69 minutes long. Maybe they can only think in terms of 60/90/120 minute blocks....I don't know, but the fact remains they are about 69 min. Always have been, always will be. End of story. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eleventh_Hour_%28UK_TV_series%29

Torchwood

Torchwood, the BBC Wales sci-fi program and spin-off of Doctor Who.

Spring & Autumn

Spring & Autumn.......sort of looks like a garden show, huh? Wrong. Thames sitcom in the 70's starring Jimmy Jewel of Nearest And Dearest fame. Also featured June Barry (who was in the 1967 version of the Forsyte Saga, the program that helped transform NET into PBS) and Larry Martyn (who seems to have guested in almost every sitcom but is best remembered as Mr. Mash in Are You Being Served?) You'll find a good synopsis about the program here:

The Smoking Room

Anyone know if this show stinks {cough}? The Smoking Room was a BBC sitcom with Debbie Chazen (Mine All Mine, Tittytittybangbang), Jeremy Swift (Next Of Kin), Emma Kennedy, Selina Griffiths, Leslie Schofield (Fall and Rise of Reginald Perrin), Paula Wilcox (The Dustbinmen, The Lovers, Man About The House), Robert Webb (Peep Show), Siobhan Redmond (Alfresco, Bulman, The High Life), etc.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Smoking_Room
The possibility of a 3rd series was squashed in the summer of 2007 when a law was enacted banning smoking within workplaces.

The Sins

The Sins was a turn-of-the-century drama from BBC. Here is a review posted on IMDB:
This multi-part drama series was easily one of the best things to come on TV during the early part of the decade: as Len Green, former robber and crook going straight, Pete Postlethwaite put in a superb performance throughout. Each of the seven deadly sins forms the loose topic around which each episode is constructed. William Ivory's finest TV series yet managed to combine humour, pathos, anger, love, redemption, and surprise, while managing to retain the viewer's attention. Quite a feat.Other members of the cast deserving the highest of praise include: Geraldine James, as Len's long-suffering wife; Neil Stuke, playing the slightly dumb Carl; Denise Black as local tart with a heart Matisse; and perhaps best of all, a staggeringly good performance from Frank Finlay as Len's Uncle Irving.A series which makes you happy to be watching television, but sadly these kind of things are becoming ever thinner on the ground. If this one comes on near you, give it a go.

The Railway Children

The Railway Children is a series of children's stories by Edith Nesbit dating back to 1905. Over the years there have been a number of TV and film versions made. The BBC made television versions in 1951, 1957 and again in 1968 and that is what is featured on this disc. There was a film made in 1970 and Carlton made another film in 1999 which I have included here as well. This was also broadcast in the US on PBS' Masterpiece Theatre. Jenny Agutter (Spooks), who played one of the children (Rebecca) in the 1970 film, was the mother in the 2000 film. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Railway_Children

Man At The Top - Series 1

Man At The Top ran for 2 series (23 episodes) on Thames. Kenneth Haigh starred as Joe Lampton, an angry Yorkshireman trapped in the south of England and seeking revenge against those that screw him over! http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0162097/combined

The Ginger Tree + Drake's Venture

Two rarities from video tape. The Ginger Tree was a tri-production of the BBC, WGBH-Boston and Japanese broadcaster NHK. There's some decent information on the IMDB website here:http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0096595/ This featured an early appearance by Samantha Bond, just following her Rumpole of the Bailey episodes.
Drake's Venture was broadcast only twice. Once in the UK on the West Country's old Westward Television channel in 1980, the other on PBS' Masterpiece Theatre in 1983. It starred John Thaw as Francis Drake and Paul Darrow as Thomas Doughty. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drake%27s_Venture

Feathered Serpent

The Feathered Serpent was an Aztec-themed program for younger viewers with Diane Keen (Cuckoo Waltz, Shillingbury Tales, You Must Be The Husband) and the late Patrick Troughton (Dr. Who, The Two Of Us, Nanny). http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0202732/
