Frank Stubbs Promotes
Frank Stubbs Promotes (Series 1) / Frank Stubbs (Series 2) is a comedy-drama from about 20 years ago starring Timothy Spall and Lesley Sharp with well-known guest stars. 50-minute episodes. From a website I found somewhere:
Frank Stubbs Promotes was a comedy/drama much in the vein of "Minder" but without the double act. Frank (Timothy Spall) is your classic down on his luck hero; in this case a promoter of actors, entertainers, sportsmen, you name it. He's broken away from his slimy boss/rival (played by Nick Reding in series 1) to be his own boss but each week, he'll either be befriending some other down on their luck has-been trying to make a comeback, or an aspiring newcomer with stars in their eyes. For the second series, the programme title was shortened to Frank Stubbs.

What's up, Mrs Brown?
Some of you have been asking if there has been any news about Mrs Brown's Boys, which briefly returned last Christmas with a couple of new episodes. Mrs Brown's Boys D'Movie will be hitting the big screens of Ireland and the UK in about a week, but isn't due for DVD release until Christmastime. BBC Entertainment published this article today:

Sam Kelly 1943 - 2014
Sam Kelly died this weekend. He is probably best remembered for his roles in the classic comedies 'Allo 'Allo!, Barbara and Porridge, but over a period of 42 years amassed a long list of credits in both comedy and drama. Other shows and mini-series in which he appeared as a regular cast member include Haggard, On The Up, Paul Merton in Galton & Simpson's..., Holding On, Bleak House, Micawber, and Martin Chuzzelwit. He appeared in two Carry On films, several Mike Leigh films, TV movies like Eleven Men Against Eleven, Beauty, Requiem Apache, Stalag Luft, Arthur's Hallowed Ground and comedy sketch shows like The Two Ronnies and Victoria Wood. He made his first TV guest appearance in an episode of The Liver Birds in 1972 (The Christening) and went on to appear in shows such as Ronnie Barker's Seven In One, Rings On Their Fingers, Maggie And Her, The Bounder, Boys From The Blackstuff, Home To Roost, Inspector Morse, Making Out, Stay Lucky, A Touch Of Frost, Dressing For Breakfast, Cold Feet, Peak Practice, Life Begins, Black Books, Midsomer Murders, Where The Heart Is, The Last Detective, The Bill, New Tricks, Heartbeat, My Family, Outnumbered. We last saw him in one of the last episodes of Poirot (Dead Man's Folly) and reportedly he will appear in a forthcoming Mike Leigh film, Mr Turner.

Rik Mayall 1958 - 2014
Comedy actor/writer Rik Mayall has died. Terms like "legendary" and "one-of-a-kind" get overused to the point of becoming meaningless, but looking back at Rik's body of work, I'm not sure how else he could be described.

Happy Valley
Happy Valley is a new crime drama written by Sally Wainwright (Bonkers, At Home With The Braithwaites, The Amazing Mrs Pritchard, Jane Hall, Last Tango In Halifax, Scott & Bailey, Unforgiven) and starring Sarah Lancashire (Where The Heart Is, Coronation Street, Clocking Off, Chambers, All The Small Things, Five Daughters, Lark Rise To Candleford, The Paradise, Last Tango In Halifax), Siobhan Finneran (Clocking Off, Amazing Mrs Pritchard, Downton Abbey, Unforgiven, Apparitions, The Syndicate) and Steve Pemberton (The League of Gentlemen, Psychoville, Whitechapel, Inside No. 9) {and, of course, Finneran and Pemberton have starred together as husband and wife in the long running comedy Benidorm} with James Norton (Death Comes To Pemberley) and others.
I was hoping this and Hinterland would fit together, but this is six 60-minute episodes and Hinterland is four 90-minute ones, so it's not even close.

Hinterland
Hinterland is a recent Welsh crime drama.
You may want to take notes on this.
It was originally aired last year in 8-parts on Welsh language TV in Welsh as Y Gwyll.
Then, as shown above, an English-language version was aired in January in four 90-minute parts, on BBC One Wales. There is some Welsh dialogue with hard-coded English subtitles, but if subtitles freak you out, don't worry about it. There's very little of it and what there is is very light.
Currently, the show is airing on BBC One nation-wide in 7 parts with both English and Welsh dialogue, but no English subtitles for the Welsh.
Published reports indicate this will return again in the future but doesn't confirm in what format.

So long, Ken
I have "met" some really nice people through this blog. From right here in Florida and across the USA to New Zealand, Australia, England, Canada, South Africa and so on. I always enjoy receiving e-mails from you and reading what you have to say and having our little "chats".
When I published my final post for 2013 I mentioned that it had been another year with a few longtime friends of this blog disappearing while new friends were made and how one old friend of the blog who had disappeared for a couple of years suddenly reappeared with an amazing story of surviving a bad car crash that left him in a nearly incognizant state until a chance encounter with a neurosurgeon who really knew his stuff gave him his life back. That was Ken in rural Ontario.
Sadly, I recently learned Ken tempted fate once again and this time it didn't have a happy ending. You didn't know Ken, but he was like many of you and I will miss him.
