The Blue Rose

From New Zealand, The Blue Rose is a new crime-mystery drama serial by Rachel Lang and James Griffin who were the creators of Outrageous Fortune. Thirteen 45-minute episodes.

The Following

The US psycho thriller The Following has ended, but will be returning for another season.

Bomb Girls

The second season of the "1940's" Canadian drama Bomb Girls has ended. This also airs in the US, UK and Ireland. It has been reported that this concludes the program although it may return in 2014 with a feature-length movie to conclude the story. If you have Series 1 and just need Series 2, the epsiodes (7 - 18) do just barely fit onto a single disk.

Anna & Katy + It's Kevin

As we pass the one-third mark of the 20-teens decade, it appears comedy sketch shows have become a lost cause compared to earlier decades. Certainly in quantity, if not quality.
Here are two new shows.

Anna & Katy stars Anna Crilly and Katy Wix with appearances by Lee Mack. Of course, Wix stars with Mack in Not Going Out which is currently airing its sixth series (concludes 31 May). Anna Crilly is undoubtedly best known for role as Magda in Lead Balloon. A pilot for this show aired about 18 months ago as part of the Comedy Lab series of pilots, but I've never come across it or any of the others.
Anna and Katy

It's Kevin stars Kevin Eldon, the veteran of many sketch shows such as Fist Of Fun, Jam, Brass Eye, Big Train, Harry and Paul and also acted in shows like Nighty Night, Hunderby, Bleak Old Shop Of Stuff, Dead Set, Hyperdrive, Funland. It's Kevin has a long list of very well-known guest stars.

Angels

Angels is a late 70's drama about student nurses (at a "St. Angela's Hospital"). The first series recently became available and hopefully the second will before too long so Disc 2 can be filled-out and a Disc 3 added. It ran for 4 series and 57 episodes before switching over to a twice-weekly serial-soap format for additional 163 episodes which came to an end around Christmas 1983.

Scotland Yard

Between February 1953 and June 1961 thirty-nine half-hour films were produced about various criminal cases from the files of Scotland Yard. These were made for the cinema but eventually found their way to television in both the UK and USA (on ABC around 1958). Even though it was a long time ago, familiar faces from later years pop up here and there. For example, John Le Mesurier appears in the first episode
yes, that's Eddie Malin on the right, remembered from the early 70's for being Madge Hindle's silent husband "Walter" on Nearest And Dearest. In fact, I suspect at the point the photo was taken Le Mesurier is saying "have you been, Walter?".
Harry H. Corbett appears in the final episode, produced shortly before he began his longest role as Steptoe's son.
If you enjoy the vintage shadowy monochrome crime noir stuff, check it out.

The Trip + Whites

I've been sitting on The Trip for well over 2 years. Originally had Whites on a disk with Pramface, but when that returned for a second series Whites had to go.

The Trip......featuring Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon.
The Trip

Whites.....with an all-star cast featuring Alan Davies, Darren Boyd, Katherine Parkinson, Stephen Wight, Isy Suttie, and Maggie Steed. It never returned for a second series supposedly because the payroll was too high but in reality, being on the BBC, there were probably PC issues with it.

The Syndicate - Series 2

The Syndicate returned for another drama serial. Different cast, different story. This time around featuring Alison Steadman, Mark Addy, and Siobhan Finneran,
The Syndicate

It's Dark Outside

It's Dark Outside......the 10 (of 16) surviving episodes. This was the second program of the police drama "Mr. Rose trilogy" with William Mervyn as Chief Inspector Charles Rose. The first program was The Odd Man (1962-1963) and the third was Mr. Rose (1967) which has Rose retired but investigating privately. Keith Barron (Telford's Change, Duty Free, Haggard, The Good Guys, All Night Long, Dead Man Weds, The Chase and most recently the pilot film for Being Eileen) played DS Swift in The Odd Man and the first 8 episodes of It's Dark Outside. James Bolam is in Episode 7.
It's Dark Outside

Love Matters + Plebs + The Mimic

3 new comedy shows.

Love Matters is another stand-alone series from Sky. Must say I enjoyed this one more than the recent Common Ground series. These episodes are full-length and feature many familiar faces including Isy Suttie, Katherine Parkinson, Rebekah Staton, Tanya Franks and Sarah Solemani......who, um, becomes more than just a familiar face. Even Lynda Baron makes an appearance (Open All Hours, Oh No - It's Selwyn Froggitt, Fat Friends, EastEnders).
Love Matters

Plebs is going to be the big one here. Modern type comedy. One long sexual innuendo. Takes place around 37 BC in Rome or something. Starring Joel Fry (Trollied, White Van Man, Massive, Twenty Twelve), Tom Rosenthal (Friday Night Dinner), Ryan Sampson (After You've Gone) with Karl Theobald (Twenty Twelve, Primeval, Green Wing), Doon Mackichan (Beast, Agony Again, The Day Today, Our Mutual Friend, Brass Eye, Bedtime, Smack The Pony, Taking The Flak) and Adrian Scarborough (Gavin & Stacey, Mrs. Biggs, Upstairs Downstairs, Cranford, Psychoville, Watson & Oliver, Let Them Eat Cake). There's even an appearance by Brian Murphy (Man About The House, George & Mildred, Last of the Summer Wine and will soon be celebrating his 80th birthday) and the final episode has an appearance from Janine Duvitski (Waiting For God, Worst Week Of My Life, Benidorm, One Foot In The Grave, Little Dorrit, This Is Jinsy, Cowboys).
Plebs

The Mimic is a gentle comedy serial. It's certainly a slice of pathos, but it works. I thought this was excellent.
The Mimic

I was intending to add another new comedy, Bluestone 42, to this disk, but it didn't fit and will have to wait for now.

Broadchurch

Broadchurch is a crime-drama / murder mystery serial starring David Tennant, Olivia Colman and others. (Think I saw Pauline Quirke in there somewhere.) It will be returning for another series but it's not scheduled to even start production until next year, so it won't be showing up any time soon.

Packed To The Rafters - Disc 9

The latest series of the popular Australian comedy-drama Packed To The Rafters. With this one out of the way for the time being, I predict Offspring will soon be returning. There has also been a report that the final series of Packed will also be airing shortly before the final series of Winners & Losers airs. We'll see.

Top Of The Lake

Top Of The Lake is a new crime drama serial (or mini-series) that was internationally co-produced by the Sundance Channel in the USA, UKTV in Australia and BBC TWO in the UK but it was filmed, and the story takes place, in New Zealand. Have you got all that? Should I put a map up here too?

Emmerdale 2012 Disks 10 & 11

It's been awhile. 40 more episodes from ITV's nightly drama serial.

Disk Player

If anyone in the U.S. is in need of a new disk player that can handle DivX format, my neighbor tells me she picked up a LG model for only $29.88 at the dreaded Walmart last week. I bought a couple Philips players for that price about 8 years ago. Wish my other living expenses were still at what I was paying 8 years ago!

Elizabeth in California reports in that she purchased an iView 103DV DVD player with USB on Amazon for only $24.22 with free shipping if you have a Prime membership. She says it not only plays .avi files - DivX format but it's "region-free" and will play DVD's from all corners of the globe. Sounds like a bargain to me.

Utopia

Been sitting on this thing for almost two months waiting to see if something similar that was only 2 or 3 episodes came along that I could add to the disc. It didn't happen.
This is a very violent thriller-drama. No comment. I could, but it wouldn't make me any friends.
Apparently it's returning next year with another series.

After an absence of three years, Foyle's War has returned with 3 new feature-length episodes. Yes, full-length here unlike the condensed versions on PBS if you're in the US.

Don't Forget To Write!

Don't Forget To Write! is a late 70's comedy of which I have been asked of it's availability a number of times in the past five years. Cross another off the list. Starring one of the greats in George Cole with Gwen Watford, Francis Matthews, Daphne Heard, Claire Walker and Ron Emslie.

Prisoners' Wives 2

Prisoners' Wives has returned for a second series. Only 4 episodes this time. Good cast. The episodes won't fit on a disc with Series 1. They take up about a half disc but I have nothing else to go with it at this time and nothing in the works at the moment. It's here if you want it.
Prisoners' Wives

Three Of A Kind

Just realized this one must have fallen through the cracks quite some time ago when someone recently asked me if I had it. I'm sure there's a lot of other things buried somewhere too.

Three Of A Kind was an early 80's comedy sketch show starring Lenny Henry, Tracey Ullman and David Copperfield (no, not the magic guy).

Jonathan Creek returns

Jonathan Creek made a rare appearance Monday night with a new feature-length episode called The Clue of the Savants
Jonathan Creek

Heading Out + The Spa + New Yes, Prime Minister

3 new comedies on 1 little disc.

Heading Out was created by, written by and stars Sue Perkins with Nicola Walker (see The Last Train post below), Dominic Coleman (Swinging, The Cup, Trollied), Joanna Scanlan (Stella, The Thick Of It, Getting On), Steve Oram (Tittybangbang) and Shelley Conn (Party Animals, Mistresses, Dead Set, The Palace, Marchlands). To me, the highlight of the show was the guest appearance of Raquel Cassidy in Episode 3 where she plays Sabine, a psychotic French woman. Her role as Cassie in Worst Week of My Life almost looks sane compared to Sabine. Brilliant. Other guest appearances also highlight the show. Dawn French (with June Brown and Jeff Rawle) in the 5th episode and other episodes found Steve Pemberton and Mark Heap appearing....lately it seems Heap turns up everywhere too.

The Spa was created and written by Derren Litten (Benidorm, The Catherine Tate Show, Pie In The Sky, Perfect World). Litten also has a main role in the show along with Rebecca Front (The Day Today, Alan Partridge, Fist Of Fun, Big Train, Time Gentlemen Please, Nighty Night, Just William, Grandma's House, The Thick Of It, Lewis), Tim Healy (A Kind Of Living, Boys From The Bush, Common As Muck, The Grand, Heartburn Hotel, Catterick, Auf Wiedersehen Pet, Dead Man Weds, Benidorm), Frances Barber (Behaving Badly, Manchild, Funland, Doctor Who, Silk), Niky Wardley (Complete Guide To Parenting, Parents Of The Band, All The Small Things, Catherine Tate Show, In With The Flynns), Debbie Chazen (Lucy Sullivan Is Getting Married, Mine All Mine, The Smoking Room, Tittybangbang, Psychoville, We Are Klang) and Nadine Marshall (Criminal Justice, The Smoking Room, Gates).

New Yes, Prime Minister......the classic returns with an updated version starring David Haig (Nice Day At The Office, The Thin Blue Line, Keeping Mum), Henry Goodman (Gravy Train Goes East, Cold Lazarus) and Chris Larkin (Roger Roger). Good writing, good acting, but difficult to get away from the feeling that it's a sketch show doing a parody of the original.

Sold + Top Buzzer

Sold + Top Buzzer

The 2004 comedy Top Buzzer is nothing new here, but now it's paired up with the 2007 comedy-drama Sold, which is new here.

Sold, with 45 minute episodes, stars Kris Marshall (My Family, Murder City, Funland, Citizen Khan), Bryan Dick (Bonjour la Classe, All The Small Things), Anthony Head (Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Manchild, Little Britain, Merlin, The Invisibles, Free Agents), and Christina Cole (Hex, Silent Witness).

The Last Train

The Last Train is a post-apocalyptic science fiction drama from 1999 starring Nicola Walker. Nicola is all over the place these days! In recent months we've seen her in A Mother's Son, Inside Men and Last Tango In Halifax and she is currently appearing in the sitcom Heading Out, the drama Prisoner's Wives and tomorrow night will be part of the cast in the new series of Scott & Bailey. 3 shows at once! Previously she was in Spooks (called MI-5 in the US) for about 9 years, and Torn, Touching Evil, Chalk and a bunch of other shows and films.

Full English + Popetown

Full English and Popetown are two British animated series.

Full English aired last Autumn and Channel 4 pulled the plug on it before airing it's 6th and final episode. It has a similar spoof concept as Family Guy but apparently the similarities end there. Some big name voice actors were used, led by Richard Ayoade (of The IT Crowd fame) and Rosie Cavaliero with Darren Boyd, Lucy Montgomery and Simon Greenall.
Full English

Popetown is a very controversial animated sitcom that was co-written by MacKenzie Crook who, of course, was one of the stars of The Office, Kevin Eldon and several others and featured the voices of people like Matt Lucas, Jerry Hall, Ruby Wax, Bob Mortimer and Ben Miller. Originally slated to be aired on BBC Three, it never made it. I think that was around 2003. In fact, no one in the UK would touch it and it wasn't until 2005 that New Zealand channel C4 became the only TV station with the guts to put it out there.
