I see that David Kelly has died. (Not the American producer/writer that lived in my neighborhood when he was a little kid.) David will be remembered for his roles in the sitcoms Oh Father!, Robin's Nest, Cowboys and Slinger's Day and his great parts in films like Waking Ned (Devine) and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. He also had many guest appearances on some very popular shows.

Peter was a very affable guy in those two shows, but Big Breadwinner Hog was noted for its violence. Ruth Jones has created and written (along with 3 others) and is starring in a new comedy-drama called Stella. The first 2 (of 10) episodes have aired. The Irish comedy Mrs Brown's Boys is back for a 2nd series. The first 3 of 8 episodes have aired. David Jason is back in a new comedy called The Royal Bodyguard (very Edgar Brigg-ish). The first 3 (of 6) episodes have aired. It's January so you know Above Suspicion is back for another 3 episode series. There's a new fantasy drama called Eternal Law that's one-third of its way through its 6 episodes. Shameless is back again with 11 new episodes of British high society entertainment. Sherlock is back for its new 3-part second series and will be wrapping it up Sunday night. This week there was a new 2-part TV adaptation of Dickens' The Mystery of Edwin Drood.
A new 6-part 1950s period-drama called Call The Midwife starts Sunday night. Wild At Heart is back for another 10 episodes in its 7th series. The Australian comedy-drama Winners & Losers is set to start airing in the UK this week....of course it's been available here for months. Also, in Canada the popular comedy-drama Republic of Doyle has returned for a third season. Did I miss anything?

This weekend on UK TV there will be the usual assortment of past Christmas episodes and specials and a few new things to look forward to.

Thursday night How Not To Live Your Life will return for a Christmas special which will also be the last ever episode.

Christmas Eve will see the Series 4 finale of Merlin, a special long episode of EastEnders, a new holiday comedy-drama called Lapland with Sue Johnston, Julie Graham, Keith Barron, Stephen Graham and Elizabeth Berrington and a Christmas special of Outnumbered.

On Christmas it will be the specials from Doctor Who and Downton Abbey and the return of Absolutely Fabulous. AbFab will also be back on New Year's Day and a third time later in 2012. There will also be hour-long special episodes from Emmerdale, EastEnders and Coronation Street.

On Boxing Day the Irish laissez-faire sitcom Mrs Brown's Boys will be returning with a Christmas episode that will kick off a second series of 8 new shows. Also, the Poirot episode "The Clocks" will be aired for the first time, I believe, in the UK. It's been broadcast in other countries several times over the past two years.

Last night Rob Brydon returned with his show for the Series 2 Christmas episode.

I'll admit this type of stuff isn't really my thing, but in checking it out I couldn't help but immediately notice how they do up the female actors somewhat realistically, but the male actors all look like they're 18 and have contemporary hair styles. Sorry, but 45 years ago Pan Am didn't have teenagers piloting their jets and they didn't look like they just walked out of a trendy West Hollywood hot spot with their entourage....which sort of gives it the look of a comedy sketch-show spoof.

After an absence of nearly a decade, Sky recently decided to jump back into sitcom production and came up with Trollied. Featuring a pretty solid group of veteran actors, the network has reportedly committed to producing 27 more episodes in the coming couple years. Of course, these things can change (The IT Crowd for example). The setting of Trollied is a supermarket and it's employees. (For those of you in North America, in the UK what you call a "shopping basket" or "shopping cart", they call a "trolley".....and the rear wheels are not fixed so they don't go in a straight line when you push them.) The creator of the show felt a sitcom about a supermarket might work and it hadn't been done before. Guess he wasn't around when Tripper's Day and Slinger's Day were on the box and then there was 2010's Shelfstackers.

Rab C. Nesbitt was back again. Rab has now been around for a long time, going back some 25 years to the sketch show Naked Video. He still has a ways to go to pass Alf Garnett in the longevity column though. I believe it was over 33 years between the Comedy Playhouse pilot for Till Death Us Do Part and the Australian show The Thoughts of Chairman Alf.
Anyways, the 10th series of the Scottish sitcom ended last week. I was able to upgrade some of the files while at the same time reducing the number of discs (the Series 8 files I had were huge for some reason).
I'd still like to get this with hard coded subtitles someday, but I don't have all the episodes that way and still haven't been able to sort that process out anyways. But for those of you that understand the Glaswegian dialect, here's Rab from A to Z, including the 1992 Live in Aberdeen performance.

In what must be a record for the longest hiatus, The Jury returned this week for a second series nearly 10 years after the first. (Come to think of it, I believe The Rag Trade was brought back after 15 years on the shelf and The Liver Birds after 16
+ years...so no broken records here.) Starring Julie Walters among other familiar faces. Series 1 was aired in the US on PBS Masterpiece. I have no idea if they'll be carrying Series 2.
